26 June 2015 - Format agreed with BF

Dear Athletes,

As promised we are now publishing our final format for the London Open 2015.

After a constructive period of discussions with British Fencing, the final format has been agreed. This agreement is exclusive to The London Open and does not affect any other event.

Tomorrow morning full competition details will be published and registration will be opened. All entries received to date will be processed over the next few days.

Finally we would like to thank British Fencing for their close co-operation. We feel this will give British fencers a better atmosphere and a better competition. We thank you all for your patience and we look forward to welcoming you to London.

Best Regards
(The Organising Committee)

Competition Format
1. Sabre will continue to run as previously.
2. Foil & Epee will run on the basis of a 2 wave system.
3. The top four seeded fencers will be given a direct bye to the second wave.
4. All other athletes will compete in the 1st wave starting with one round of poules followed by DE’s until the Tableaux of 32 is completed and only 16 fencers remain in the competition.
5.  The 16 fencers will be promoted to the second wave.
6. The second wave will start with poules after which four fencers will be eliminated.
7. If any fencers eliminated at this stage are overseas fencers (not in the top 50 of world ranking) who had received a direct bye to the second wave, they will not contribute to the niff nor will they receive GB ranking points (even if they have a GB licence).
8. From this stage onwards 16 fencers will fence in DE format until the finals.

22 May 2015 - BF Collaboration

Dear Athletes,

We are making this public announcement in response to a large number of requests for registration for 2015 and postal entries. This will save us the task of replying to each registration request individually.

The registration for the London Open 2015 has not yet opened. We can only take registrations and confirm them when the registrations have been announced open. The reason for the delay in announcing the opening of the registration is explained below.

Following the change in British Fencing rules for domestic Opens last year and the many significant new and adjusted clauses introduced, we felt that it would be appropriate to discuss the final format of the competition with British Fencing. This has been tasked to our DT Manager. He has indeed been in contact with British Fencing and he is awaiting their feedback. Therefore, we await the conclusion of these discussions before we announce the final format and then we will announce the registration open.

We do apologise for the delay and we do appreciate your attempt to book early, but we feel that this course of action will serve the best interests of British fencers.

Best Regards
(The Organising Committee)

19 May 2015 - Single Weapon Style Announced

Dear Athletes,

As promised we have more good news to announce.

Last year when the event was all completed, the management team held feedback sessions to evaluate and study the feedback from the participating athletes. Then the conclusions and recommendations were submitted to the events committee for them to consider.

Earlier this year the committee commissioned the management team for the London Open 2015. The management team was given a list of recommendations and tasked to decide on the feasibility of implementation and agree a final plan with our sponsors.

We can announce today that the management team have made new internal plans for 2015 so that each weapon will have its own DT results personnel, Competition Control, Piste allocations and other measures including a new parallel local/global PA system. This will ensure that each weapon will run independently with all the benefits of a single weapon competition, in addition to the benefits of a multi-weapon competition.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their positive and intelligent feedback. We certainly hope that this may continue as we aim to continue the improvements year after year.

Best Regards
(The Organising Committee)

12 May 2015 - Prize Money Announced

Dear Athletes,

Last year representatives from our sponsors attended the Gala at a special VIP Lounge area. They were pleased with the way the London Open is progressing. The marketing manager and her team have been actively negotiating sponsorship for 2015.

We are proud to announce that we have yet again been successful in securing a substantial sponsorship package. This will see our Prize money increase from £6000 last year to £8000 this year. All medal places continue to receive prize money.

We are very grateful to our sponsors for their generosity, their marketing support and for believing in our plans. We would equally like to thank the athletes for their continued support and feedback. With a great organising team and the support of the fencers we look forward to a better event for 2015.

Best Regards
(The Organising Committee)

Interim Statement
The London Open Organising Committee

We would like to reassure fencers that we are continuing to work very closely with British Fencing and with a high level of co-operation. These discussions are still on-going.

The decision was taken by The London Open Organising Committee to refrain from issuing any statement until we had more clarity. We do not wish to prejudice any complainant or the ongoing discussions. We are grateful for all the support that we have received to date and we fully understand the concerns of fencers.

A full statement will be issued in due course.

19 July 2014 - Booking Closed

Dear All,

Booking for the London Open 2014 is now closed. Final preparations are now underway.

The last two days all the way until midnight of the booking deadline we received a large volume of enquiries, entries and spectator ticket bookings. We apologise if we have been slow in response. We still have some fencers who have booked but not paid the entry fee yet or some entry information missing. Those fencers have until midnight tonight to make their payment otherwise their booking will be cancelled. We also are waiting for two to three visa approvals. We aim to clear all that up by the end of the day today.

Tomorrow the DT team will compile the entries and evaluate the seeding. On Monday the final timetable and format will be decided. As advertised on Wednesday 23rd a final email will go out to all participants with final details and fencers who have an automatic bye to the second wave will be informed.

Meanwhile enjoy the World Championships and good luck to the athletes who are taking part. We will see you all soon in London.

21 May 2014 - To All Sabre Fencers

Dear Sabre Fencers,

We are grateful to one of the fencers who wrote in to us yesterday to advise us that no points were awarded to otherwise a high niff Men’s Sabre last year. This was because the seeding round was run as mixed. The reason for running it as such is obvious, but our team was not aware of the loss of niff.

All feedback we receive is considered, discussed and debated and where possible changes are made for the future. In this case, the organising committee discussed this matter by email and have unanimously agreed to respond presently by issuing the following statement.

“We would like to assure the sabre fencers that from this year on we will never run the sabre seeding round as mixed. Further, we would like to reach out to the sabre community and encourage them to support their weapon so that we can sell sabre better to our sponsors. We are keen to see all weapons represented strongly.”

As always we are grateful for all your email feedback.

The Organising Committee

20 May 2014 - The 5th London Open 2014

Be part of something different!!

We are excited to announce the launch of the 2014 London Open with many new features. After a great amount of negotiations and planning we are now proud to say that we have yet again secured a substantial sponsorship package. This also means that we have increased the cash prize money from £4000 last year to £6000 this year. Even better, now all medal places will be receiving cash prizes and not only the winners.

What is also new for 2014 is that Epee will be run on a two wave system. This year the two wave system will be on two days, with the first wave on Saturday and the second wave on Sunday. On Saturday the top four fencers from the first wave who do not get into the second wave will also receive medals. The Gala Finals on Sunday should be a great spectacle for the sport.

We would like to thank everyone for their continued support. With a great organising team and the support of the fencers we look forward to a better event for 2014.

Registration is now open and fencers can now start entering.

(The Organising Committee)

Therefore, we anticipate that we will be able to announce the details for 2014 London Open by the end of next week. Our proposed date is the same as last year, pending the approval of the sponsorship committee next week.

We thank all the fencers for their continued support.

31 July 2013 - A successful London Open 2013

A successful London Open 2013

The organising committee would like to thank all the participants for making each of the six events run smoothly and seamlessly. Congratulations to the winners for their achievement and for winning their respective prize monies. We hope that you all enjoyed your day of fencing and for those podium places, we hope that you enjoyed the Gala Finals.

All the results are now posted on the website. If there are any errors please alert us immediately. We will wait 24 hours before we send all of this to the relevant ranking co-ordinators and British Fencing. We welcome any comments and suggestions. Whilst we will consider all suggestions, we have to admit that we cannot implement them all, at least not immediately. We are also grateful for your messages of support. Keep them coming.. We do distribute them internally to all members of the team which will boost their enthusiasm to continue to put their time into the running of this event.

The organising committee will be assessing all aspects of the event after receiving reports from DT and the various teams. Then we will start preparations for 2014. We have put on a special celebration event for the sponsors and their corporate clients as a thank you gesture and to strengthen our relationship. We would like to thank our generous sponsors, without whom we could not have achieved our aspirations for the London Open. We hope to bring you an even better weekend of competition next year.

Introduction 2013

This is our fourth year, and we have had a lot of supporting emails and a lot of valuable feedback. We continue to strive to make this a better event. We do listen to the fencers and do make improvements and changes. Simultaneously we need to keep our sponsors happy, as they will ultimately approve the final plan.

As you can see, we have not announced the details of the cash prize money yet as the amounts and the distribution across the events are still under negotiation. Once approved we will announce it here. The overall sponsorship budget has been approved and this does include a substantial sum.

Please note that we have changed the event dates. Foil is now on Saturday while Sabre and Epee are now on Sunday. The exact timetable and the maximum entry numbers will be announced in due course. But for the first two weeks entry is open to fencers who are already registered from previous years.

Welcome to The London Open 2013

After few rounds of negociations, this week we have had an official confirmation from our sponsours. Therefore, we are pleased to announce that for the fouth year running we have secured sponsorship for The London Open. We are still finalising the final details which will require some more negociations for their approval.

The more fencers support this event the more leverage we will have to negotiate a better sponsorship deal for the fencers. We are committed to bringing a good competition to all participants. All year round the organising committee is working behind the scenes to bring you a better competition.

After an exciting Olympic year last year, we surprised our fencer by taking The London Open to the Olympic Venue at the Excel centre. This year we are back at our usual venue. But we may still have a good surprise for the fencers. We hope that you will enjoy London once more and have a pleasant competition weekend.

(The Organising Committee)

30 July 2012

Dear London Open Fencers,

As you know The Olympic Games are well underway and Fencing is being held at the Excel Centre, the same venue as the 2012 London Open. In a few hours time at 10:30 Tuesday morning (Day 4) GB Foil fencers will be in action. We have 30 tickets surplus for the day session of various categories.

Therefore we would like to offer them to our loyal participants at the London Open 2012. When we say offer, we mean offer them for free. Yes, we understand that there is not much time before this morning's games starting, but some of you might be able to take advantage of this free offer.

If you would like a ticket, please text me your name and confirm that you would like a ticket. I will text you back to confirm that the ticket is reserved for you. I will be at the Excel entrance around 9:45 & 10:00am to give you your tickets.

Good Luck

As of Friday 25th of May the number of entries has exceeded 150. One or two categories have already reached their maximum number, so we opened an extra pool for each. This does not include fencers who have booked and not paid. Of course foreign fencers get a free entry. There are still many fencers who have emailed to book but their payments have not yet been received. If you are paying by debit or credit card, make sure you leave a voicemail so that you can be contacted back. The booking deadline is Thursday 31st May at 9:30am. After that time no entries will be accepted under any circumstances. Security is tight at the Excel Centre so close to the Olympics and we have to produce all the accreditations for all the fencers in advance.

The Excel Centre is a very large complex including a few hotels on site. These are now either full or at a very high price. We still have some hotel bookings at a lower rate, if you need assistance with hotel accommodation please contact us quickly so that we can help you.

After booking is closed on Thursday 9:30am, final information, including timetable and schedule will be prepared and emailed to all registered participants before the next morning.

29 May 2012

Dear The London Open Organisers,

I am writing to advise you that central London will be very busy throughout the Diamond Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend.

If you intend to be in central London please use public transport, plan your journey to and from London in advance and check before you travel. Tube stations in central London and those along the river will be busier than usual. There will be a number of bus diversions and curtailments.

Drivers are advised to avoid central London between 3 and 5 June. Sunday 3 June will be particularly busy due to a number of road and bridge closures. Seven London bridges will be closed to both road users and pedestrians for most of the day as well as four London bridges for up to an hour during the afternoon.

Welcome to The London Open 2012

We are pleased to announce that we have again secured sponsorship for the London Open and the overall cash prize money has increased. The more fencers support this event the more leverage we will have to negotiate a better sponsorship deal for the fencers. We are committed to bringing a good competition to all participants. All year round the organising committee is working behind the scenes to bring you a better competition.

This is of course a special year for London as it is the Olympic year and we have secured the Olympic fencing venue for the competition. This is an excellent venue for transport and facilities. We hope that you will enjoy this high profile venue and have a pleasant competition weekend.

12 JUN 2011

The foil ranking update for June has now been received form the ranking list co-ordinator. The waves for men's and women's foil will be allocated and fencers will be emailed individually tomorrow to confirm their places.

04 JUN 2011

The 1st of June was our confirmation date for second wave fencers for foil. The National Ranking list has not been updated yet. Therefore, we will reset our confirmation date as follows:
> 10th of June (email entries).
> 11th June (postal entries).

On the 12th of June if the June National Ranking is still not available we will use the May ranking list. On the same day, the 12th of June, all registered fencers will be informed if they have made it into the second wave, the first wave and if any of the categories are full the fencers will be informed that they are on a reserve list. This will give those few top seed fencers who have not entered yet a chance to still register and get selected for the second wave.

10 MAY 2010
All entry forms have been posted to the clubs. The registration is now open.
